Sahal MInaa Lilaahi Wa inaa Ileyhi Raajicuun – indeed! We are from Allah and we will return to him. Sahal Moallin Isse prominent Somali poet and song writer passed away in London, Uk  today November 9, 2013.

Somalis in general and specifically the May speaking communities lost gifted poet and song writer. His long career of song writing and composing in both Maxaa-tiri and May dialects were culminated with the powerful play during Somali peace conference in Arta, Djibouti in 2000. The moving songs like Lihdankii Libeehee haayneey (we were lions in the sixties), Nebedaa Naas la Nuuga leh (only in peace we can get milk), Heliis Wal ku Roon ma Haaynoo (nothing is better than reconcilliation) and Harbi Hadiignimaadiis (the ethics of war) were not only appropriate for the forum but became signature of his peace activist legacy.

Sahal was born in Baidao, Somalia in early fifties where he got his primary education and later on he continued his secondary school in Mogadishu, Somalia.

Sahal came from religious family and that had great influence in all his poems and songs. His songs were performed by best singers that Somalia ever had like Hassan Aden Samater, Shiiraan Shiidaad Muraad, Abdi Dige, Khadija Abdullahi Daleeys, Khadija Foodeey, Shimaali, Sahro Dawo, Buunis etc.

Sahal passed away at his home in London, United Kingdom surrounded by his wife, children and other family members. Those who enjoyed his work should contribute to the promotion of the Maay litrature by supporting any initiative that promotes the culture of the Maay speaking people in South Westren Somalia.
