Somalia: Lawmakers Condemn Suicide Attack On New President

Mogadishu — Several Lawmakers in Somali parliament, have condemned in the strongest terms Wednesday’s suicide attacks on Somalia’s newly elected president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

The first since the president was selected by the parliament on Monday [September 10], marking the culmination of a series of landmark steps to bring an end to the country’s eight-year political transition.

“As Somali MPs we strongly denounce attacks on a hotel in the capital, Mogadishu, where the country’s new President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, was giving a press conference with the Kenyan Foreign Minister, Samuel Ongeri,” said MP Mohamed Abdi Yusuf.

He called upon security agencies to ensure the safety of the president and prevent such attacks from happening in Mogadishu.

Also president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said Thursday that such acts will not reverse the recent achievements or weaken the determination of the Somali people to achieve peace and security in their country.

The condemnation came a day after three suicide bombers dressed in Somali uniform attempted to enter the Jazeera Hotel, which served President Mohamud’s temporary residence on his two day in office.
